Firestopping

Penetration sealing systems are critical in maintaining the fire rating and preventing the spread of smoke between fire compartments in walls and floors where mechanical, electrical and general services are present. Firestopping is a complex process and materials will only perform effectively if they are installed in accordance with test certification and manufacturer’s instructions.

This is often overlooked resulting in fires that should have been prevented or at least contained. At PSTG Fire Protection we specialise in the installation of intumescent materials to all types of service penetrations and voids. All our staff are trained to a minimum NVQ Level 2 and more importantly have a wealth experience in the industry and all things Firestopping. In addition to this, our clients are able to speak to any of our office-based technical experts who are always at the other end of the phone.

Fire Door Maintenance

Due to the nature of fire doors being used in a functional way on a regular basis, they are at greater risk of damage and abuse, seriously compromising the fire protection in your building. It is therefore critical to ensure regular inspections and remediation, preventing the need for replacement, and more importantly, ensuring your buildings remain compliant.

At PSTG Fire Protection, our expert fire door maintenance team applies a set of industry-accepted repair techniques which reinstate the integrity of the fire door, enabling it to perform as originally intended in the event of a fire. This goes a long way to support our clients by making their premises safe while simultaneously driving huge cost savings by repairing instead of replacing.

Intumescent Coatings

Intumescent coatings to structural steel are also used in buildings as a passive fire protection measure. PSTG Fire Protection are approved application contractors for industry leading intumescent coating manufacturers, offering fire protection on structural steel for times ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. We work closely with our client and intumescent coating manufacturers to analyse plans and drawings to produce a steel loading report for each job, ensuring that the correct amount of intumescent coating is applied to meet the fire protection requirements for each job. During application, we will also test all wet film thicknesses to guarantee that the correct amount of material is being applied. When the intumescent coating is dry we will then use a Positector coating thickness gauge to make sure that all specified dry film thicknesses are correct. All readings are stored and presented in a report at completion of the works. This strict record keeping ensures peace of mind that all intumescent coatings have been applied correctly and to the manufacturers specification.

Fire Door Inspections

Current guidance recommends that fire doors and their components should be checked periodically as determined by the building’s fire risk assessment. During a fire door inspection our technicians will check for several components including:

- Door leaf
- Door frame
- Door closer (self-closing devices)
- Hinges
- Intumescent door strip and cold smoke seals
- Glazing (vision panels)
- Locks and levers/handles
- Fire safety signage
- Hold open devices
- Gaps around the doors and threshold gaps
- Panic hardware devices for external final fire exit doors

Following the fire door inspection you will receive a detailed report which will outline the condition and functionality of each door, plus a full list of any remedial work that is needed to bring the doors up to the necessary standard.

Cavity barriers

Installed at the interface between the perimeter of a building and its external façade. These can be either ventilated or non-ventilated depending on the design of each individual project.

UK Building Regulations require buildings to adhere to national standards of compartmentation, wherein spaces and cavities within a building’s structure are divided by Cavity Barriers. This is designed to keep fires in the area where they originated for as long as possible, reducing the risk of fire, smoke, and dangerous gases spreading to other areas of the building.

Compartmentation Surveys

A compartmentation survey is designed to assess the fire risk of each individual area or sub-division of your building. Compartmentation is designed to help prevent the rapid spread of smoke and fire. It can also protect escape routes and high-risk or high-value areas within the building. PSTG Fire Protection will undertake a detailed on-site survey, which will include assessing the fabric of the building in detail and evaluating the compartmental resilience to the spread of smoke and fire. Our compartmentation survey includes:

- A thorough visual inspection of all areas where a fire could potentially spread. This includes assessing the condition of compartmentation features including walls, ceilings and floors and a detailed inspection of hard-to-access areas, including loft voids and air ducts.

- Assessment of fire-resistant materials used in construction to ensure these meet the required fire safety standards.

- Verifying that partition walls are fire-rated and provide adequate fire breaks.

Dependent on requirements, we will advise if a non-invasive or invasive survey is required. Once completed, we’ll provide you with a written report detailing required improvements (both structural and non-structural). If you wish, we can then arrange for one of our carefully selected construction and maintenance partners to carry out any work to bring you up to the required standards in the agreed time frames.
